Augusta was born to Frederick and Louisa (Boss) Holmes in Burlington, Wisconsin, in 1859. Her nickname was most often "Gusta" to her family.

At age 22, Augusta married Benedict Holmes on October 27, 1881. They had four children living to an adult age.

1. Viola Mae Holmes (1882-1949), married Eugene William Katzman and had four sons. She and her husband had a farm in Spring Prairie.

2. Florence L. Holmes (1886-1953) who was a school teacher in the area. She married Chester Richardson in 1922, they had no children.

3. Dr. Benjamin H. Holmes (1888-1939) who first married Esther Tyrrell and had one child. After his service in WW I, he was divorced and then later married Alice Mehder in 1926, but had no additional children. Benjamin was medical doctor in Racine, Wisconsin.

4. Dorothy Boss Holmes (1894-1964), married Robert S. M. Fraser and they had three children, living first in Burlington, and then the Philadelphia area.

Augusta lived all her life in Burlington, Wisconsin, until her final years when she went to live with her son in Racine, after the death of her husband.

She was visiting with the family of her oldest daughter, Viola Katzman, in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin at the time of her death.

She passed away at the age of 67, and is buried next to her husband in the Burlington Cemetery.
