He married Doris Mary Baker, November 25, 1942 and together they had 7 children. They were later divorced. He married Patricia James on September 29, 1979. They were later divorced.

Brownie grew up on the family farm in College Ward were he learned the value of hard work and acquired the nickname "Brownie" due to his suntanned skin as a result of many hours in the sun. He and his brothers were well known for their athletic ability on the baseball field. He attended South Cache High School.

Dell and Doris, with their young family, managed their own farm west of Logan in the early years of their marriage. He later owned and operated Hansen Septic Tank Company for many years. He enjoyed running his backhoe and setting septic tanks for many customers throughout Cache Valley as well as southern Idaho and the Bear Lake area. Upon retiring from the septic tank business, he and his son owned Hansen's Used Cars.

Most recently his "work" has included daily visits to Angie's Restaurant and weekly trips to the Smithfield Auction.

Brownie is survived by his 6 children; Kay (Effie) of Butte, Montana, Pauline (Danny) Harris of Logan, Mike (Debbie) Hansen of Hyrum, Kathy (Clayne) Liechty of Nibley, Sandra (Todd) Davis of Smithfield, and Susan Gillies of Logan. Also surviving are two brothers, Bill and Robert Hansen, both of Logan, and a sister, Rhoda Duce of Lancaster, California.
