Clarence Emery was born 28 July 1874 in Southbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Edwin Emery and Louisa Farnham Wing Emery. He attended the Bangor Theological Seminary, graduating in 1899. He was the Pastor of Congregational Church in Stowe, Vermont. On 19 September, 1899, Clarence married Mabel Louise Bolton and had five children: Rebecca, Alice "Betty", Edwin, Anthony, and Phyllis. By 1918, the family was in Colorado, eventually settling in Pueblo.
