Sister Lucy Schoenberg, O.S.F., 91, died Tuesday October 6, 2009 at St. Francis Convent, Hankinson, ND.
Sister Lucy, born March 14, 1918, in Spring Hill, Minnesota, was the second of eleven children born to William and Eleonore (Braun) Schoenberg. She attended the same rural school as her father where the primary grades were taught in German.
As a young woman, Sister Lucy helped manage the family farm for three years until her brother Victor was old enough to take over. After those years she was free to respond to God's call to religious life. Early in 1942, at the age of 23, she entered St. Francis Convent as a Postulant; she was received as a novice in her religious order on July 22 of the same year. Sister Lucy made her First Profession of Vows on July 24, 1943.
Sister Lucy received her teachers training at Minot State College, Minot, ND and Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she earned B.S. degree in education. Later she continued her education at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND.
Following the profession of her vows, Sister Lucy embarked on what would become over half-century of teaching. She began as prefect of the boarders at St. Francis Academy in 1943 and also taught primary grades. After teaching in Hankinson, she received a series of short-term assignments in the parochial grade schools at St. Charles in Oakes, Holy Family School in Grand Forks, St. Boniface in Lidgerwood, St. Philips School, Napoleon and St. John's, Wahpeton. In 1971 she returned to Holy Family School, where she taught until her retirement in 2000.
For over fifty years she taught summer religion classes to grade school youngsters in rural parishes of the Fargo Diocese, worked with the migrant summer program in Auburn, ND, for twelve years, served on the holy Family Pastoral Council for ten years and, following her retirement, privately tutored young students until decreasing vision finally forced her to give up all activities at Holy Family School. Still not finished, Sister then turned her attention to the residents of St. Anne's Guest Home, Grand Forks, daily playing cards and reading to them. After almost 60 years in the missions of her order Sister Lucy fully retired and returned to Hankinson on October 5, 2002.
Survivors include: Sisters of St. Francis, Hankinson, ND; Sisters: Mary Jane (Norbert) Schneider, Melrose, MN, and Helen (Robert) Mueler, Belgrade, MN. Brothers: Father Oscar Schoenberg, O.S.C., Brother Leo Schoenberg, O.S.C., Onamia, MN, and Brother Walter Schoenberg, O.C.S.O., Peosta, IA. She was preceded in death by a sister, Flora Eull and four brothers: Lawrence and John Schoenberg who died in infancy, Victor Schoenberg and Father Martin Schoenberg, O.S.C.
Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 P.M., Saturday, October 10, 2009 at St. Francis Convent Chapel, Hankinson, ND.
Visitation will be from 2 - 4 P.M., Friday, October 9, 2009 with a prayer service at 7:30 P.M. at St. Francis Convent Chapel, Hankinson, ND.
