Paragould lost one of its community leaders Wednesday with the death of Jeptha F. Futrell, Jr.

Preceeded in death by his parents Vestal Cothren and Jeptha F. Futrell, Sr., Futrell, his wife Earlene Grady Futrell; daughter Diane Futrell. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Drs. Mike and Josie Futrell of Shreveport, LA, Danny and Linda Futrell of Paragould, and Bill and Lee Anne Futrell of Eads, TN; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Jill and Michael Sloas of Paragould, Dawn and Brian Cassidy of New York City, NY, Farrah and Brandon Ollis of Martin, TN, Misty and Bart Alexander of Shreveport, LA, Heather and Steven Henderson of Ft. Mitchell, AL, Lindsey and Philip Way of Little Rock, Allie Eastlick of Eads, TN and MaryBeth Eastlick of Eads, TN,; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Frank and Laura Hurst of Downers Grove, IL; great grandchildren, Zoe Sloas, Abby Ollis, Andrew Ollis, Kiersten Henderson, Hayden Hurst, Ben Sloas, Connor Hurst, and Bailey Way.

A lifelong resident of Greene County, Futrell served his community, state and country at many capacities.

A 1956 graduate of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Futrell was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and was a lifetime member of the ASU Indian Club.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corps and later, during the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force.

Owner and operator of the Party Store in Greene County, Futrell had his hand in an assortment of organizations, including the Civitan Club, Paragould Jaycees, Paragould Beautiful Commission, Paragould/Greene County Chamber of Commerce and Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society.

In addition, he served as a commissioner for City Light and Water from 1971 to 1975 and again from 1987 to 1996.
Appointed as a commissioner for the Arkansas Parks and Tourism by former Gov. Bill Clinton, Futrell served in that capacity from 1989 until 1995.

Futrell was president of the Greene County Beer Association for more than 20 years.

He was awarded the Outstanding Community Leader of the Year award by the Kiwanis Club in 1992, was a member of the American Legion and attended First United Methodist Church of Paragould.

The nephew of Arkansas Gov. Junius Marion Futrell, Futrell served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1974.

With his death, Futrell leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.

Funeral Services were under the direction of Heath Funeral Home. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
