William Michael Rufus "Bud" Gray

Bud was the third of ten children born to John Almon Gray and Loretta Jane Keith on November 13, 1856 in Alabama, probably Fort Payne in DeKalb County.

He was married October 1, 1875 in Dade County, Georgia to Minerva Tennessee Price, daughter and one of seven children born in Alabama to James H. Price and Mary [unknown last name]. They had three children; Loretta Jane (1878-1937), James Almon (1876- died as an infant), and William Kelly (1880-1913). Minerva contracted tuberculosis and died January 8, 1883 in Collinsville, DeKalb County, Alabama.

Bud, a widower with two young children, seven months later, August 4, 1883, married Julia Isam, born December 1862. They had a son, Charley Walteson Gray July 26, 1884 in Birmingham, Alabama. Julia died six days later, August 1, 1884. Charley must have died very young for he did not appear in a family photograph six or eight years later. On August 1, 1885 he then married Mary Fannie Hill, daughter of Augustus P. Hill and Ersula [last name unknown]. They had one child, a son named James Hendrix Gray (1888-1932) born in Alabama. They were divorced. Fannie married a couple more times, including A.G. Perry and died January 29, 1946 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.

On June 21,1905 in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana he married Rebecca Andrea Rogers. Bud and Rebecca had one child, Rufus Andrea Gray (1906-1969).

Bud was a farmer in Alabama and was working for the railroad in Louisiana where he met Rebecca. When he retired from the railroad they moved to the El Dorado area of Union County, Arkansas. He enjoyed making furniture and had a woodworking shop which was intriguing for visiting grand kids. They lived there until he died May 31, 1940 at the age of eighty-three. He was buried in the family plot of his daughter, Loretta Jane Gray Adcock, in Camp Creek Cemetery, Union Parish, Louisiana. His tombstone was made by his grandson George A. Adcock.

Note about his name: Note: The initials "W.M.R. Gray" were used on his marriage license, seen and photographed by Jim and Erma Williams on 26 May 2005 in the Trenton, GA Courthouse Records repository.
