At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Civil War on 12 Mar 1864 as a private in Company K, Indiana 120th Infantry Regiment. On 14 Aug 1864 while in Atlanta, Georgia, James married Eliza Smith. James mustered out of the 120th Infantry on 8 Jan 1866. He returned to Indiana but within five years had moved to Grant, Riley County, Kansas to live with this brother, Gordon and his family.
In Kansas in the year 1886, James married Rosella A Cline, the daughter of Emily L Kaufman and UFN Cline. They had 2 sons: Harry Judson Sweany and Ray Cline Sweany. James, Rose and Harry moved to Arkansas in 1892, where Ray was then born.

SWEANY, James H. - James H. Sweany died Sunday at the family home adjoining Bentonville on the north, of influenza and pneumonia at the age of seventh-two years. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Ray of this city and Harry who is located in Oklahoma. Mr. Sweany came to Bentonville from Indiana about twenty-eight years ago and was an old soldier, enlisting in the Union Army when a mere boy and serving throughout the war.
