Catherine's maiden name was McCabe. According to the obituary for her sister Elizabeth, wife of John Shields, the McCabe family originated in County Meath, Ireland. When they first moved to this country they settled in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. That may be where Catherine married her first husband, James Fay. The Fay and McCabe families settled in Unadilla Township of Livingston County, Michigan before 1840. James and Catherine Fay had three children, Thomas born in New York, and Richard and Jane born in Michigan. James Fay passed away in the late 1840's. Catherine was married to Owen Martin January 28, 1850, by Father Patrick O'Kelly, a travelling Catholic Priest who performed marriages and baptisms in the varioius parishes throughout Livingston and Washtenaw Counties at that time.

From Ingham County Democrat, Thursday, March 13, 1879, pg. 8, col. 1:

"Bunkerhill Center, March 10, 1879

Mrs. Martin, mother of Mrs. Philip Heeney, died at the residence of her daughter, on Wednesday last, in her 80th year."
