Randy R. Black "L&A YA" Randy Reid Black passed away Sunday, Oct. 4 in his son's home after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born Jan. 5, 1947 in Murray, Utah to the proud parents, Orin Porter Black and Vanice Beck Black. He was raised in Murray and graduated from Murray High School before serving an L.D.S. mission to the French East Mission. Upon return, and a short stint in the Utah Air National Guard, he attended the University of Utah where he studied pre-dental and met his wife Janet Johnson. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple Aug 6, 1970. After graduation from the University of the Pacific dental school in San Francisco, Calif., he returned to Salt Lake City to practice dentistry with his two brothers (Brent and Jerry) for 35 years, where he always made every patient feel like they were the most important and his favorite. He always considered his patients dear and close friends. He is survived by Jan, his five children: Michael (Amanda), Amie Secrist (Ryan), Rebecca Hyer (Matt), Adam (Megan), Maggie Elizabeth and his pride and joy 12 grandchildren -- each one his favorite. Randy loved his family. Parents Orin P. Black, deceased and Vanice B. Black deceased; siblings O. Brent (Sally, deceased), Maried Horton, deceased (Brent), Marlene Rass-mussen (Lee), Phyllis Sperry (David), Jerry (Debbie), Janet Brooks (Walter). Randy dedicated his life to service. Whether it came through his many, many church callings to performing dental work at the homeless shelter to being there to help a friend, his message was that true happiness comes through service to your fellow man. Even as he left this probationary period, his last thoughts and prayers were how he wished he could have served everyone he knew just a little more. Funeral services will be Friday, October 9, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the South Mountain 8th Ward, 1911 E. Gray Fox Drive (14100 South; Just East of Draper Temple). Interment: Murray City Cemetery.
