January 24, 1972: "Ernest Rainey Dies, Services Slated Tuesday - Ernest R. Rainey, 74, died early today at Mercy Hospital. Although in ill health for some time, his death came unexpectedly.
"Born in Tennessee, Mr. Rainey had lived in Vicksburg since 1933. He was employed with the U.S. Engineers on the boat Jadwin until his retirement in 1952. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Bowmar Avenue Baptist Church.
"He leaves his widow, Mrs. Freda B. Rainey; a brother, E. B. Rainey of Cross Plains, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. F. M. Mangum of Milan, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews.
"Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Harold Jordan, interim pastor of Bowmar Avenue Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
"Active pallbearers will be E. S. Paris, T. W. Green, W. L. Clarke, Touphie Habeeb, George Schaff, Albert Davis, Jim Moss, John Laughlin, E. B. Ousts, Lewyl Cockerham, Morris Hall, the latter of Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be Capt. Bernard Reynolds and Dr. John S. Shell."
