Adam (Toots) Atchison, 78, a long-time resident of Rockdales's City Hall and who became the local fire department's number-one driver ofn Sept. 13, 1937, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in a Bryan hospital. he had been in failing health for several months.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Phillips & Luckey Chapel in Rockdale, with burial in the IOOF Cemetery. The Rev. Allison Joyce, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiated.
Born Feb. 13, 1888 in Giddings, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Atchison, he had spent most of his life in Rockdale. He moved here when he was eght years old in 1895 when the City hall was under construction. It was later to be his home.
Although he had spent most of his life here, he moved to Bryan January 8 this yer to live with a sister, Mrs. Annie Mae Davenport.
He worked for many years as an electrician for Texas Power & Light Co. and was retired from that firm. He was a member of the Rockdale Fire Department for more than 20 years and retired from this service in 1957.
As the number-one driver of the fire truck for the Rockdale Fire Department, Atchison, lived in his own room at the city Hall for more than 20 years.
He served in the U.S. Army from July 22, 1918 to March 21, 1919, and was overseas from Sept. 24, 1918, until Feb. 22, 1919.
"Toots" was known by everyone in Rockdale. When his sister's husband died he decided to move to Bryan to be with her. Asked when he would come back he replied, "Oh, I guess whenever Clyde Jones (his mortician friend) comes to get me."
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Annie Mae Davenport of Bryan; also several nieces and nephews, and one great niece.
Members of the Rockdale Fire Department were pall bearers.
