Backus, age 49, had been undergoing periodic hospital treatment since injuring his back in 1946. He had entered the hospital the last time on January 5, 1953.
Born October 7, 1903 at Fowler, Colorado, Backus came to Bozeman at the age of 24. Just previous to his coming here he served three years in the U.S. Navy following World War I. He was a member of Bozeman FOE No. 326.
He was married to Julia Verwolf in 1935. Besides his widow, Backus is survived by two daughters, Leota Maxine and Ardith Elaine, and two Brothers, W. F. Backus, Denver, Colorado, and V. A. Backus, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Dahl Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Hills Cemetery with Eagle rites.
