Chester Sanford Belknap passed away November 2, 1920 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. H. Davis in Valley City, N.D., and with his passing one more soldier of the Civil War has answered the last roll call.

His daughters, Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Wilder were called to his bedside. He was conscious until a ew hours before the end came praying and praising God most of the time and the day before he departed he joined his feeble voice in singing a hymn with his daughters.

Mr. Belknap was born in Frankfort, N.Y., in 1831 and at the age of 21 years he was united in marriage to Marie Eckert of Ulster county, N.Y. They made their home in New York until coming to Minnesota in 1875 where they have since resided. His faithful companion of 66 years preceded to the better land Dec. 22, 1919. Seven children are left to mourn his loss, Chester S. Belknap, Mrs. Ida Oyer and Mrs. Lewis Morton, all of New York; Mrs. O.J. Robinson of Mayville, N.D., Mrs. C.H. Davis of Valley City, N.D., Mrs. Edward Hastings of Waukon, Iowa, and Mrs. P. C. Wilder of Austin, Minn.

Mr. Belknap was ever a kind and helpful neighbor, a tender, loving husband and father, and a conscientious and devoted Christian, not living to himself alone, but always trying to help lift the burdens of others and scattering sunlight along the way.

"Let us be patient, we who mourn with weeping his dear vanished face the Lord has taken but to add more beauty and a divine grace.

Chester enlisted at Amboy, N.Y., on August 27, 1862 at the age of 31 and was mustered into the 147th Infantry, Co. H. as a sergeant on September 23, 1862. He was discharged as a private on September 12, 1863 in Washington, D. C. He is described as; born in Herkimer County, N.Y., has blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. He is 5 feet, six ½ inches tall and his occupation was a farmer.
