Alvin Joseph Guffey of Mechanicsville died at his home on August 5th 2005 at the age of 64 after a battle of several years with colon cancer. Mr. Guffey grew up in Shelbyville, Tennessee, but was born in Gary, Lake County, Indiana, on December 27, 1940, the son of the late Wayne W. Guffey and Ruth K. Myers Guffey Hull of Bell Buckle, Tennessee who survives. He is also survived by his wife, Judith Hammond Guffey, whom he married on June 23, 1968. He is also survived by his children,Nabil I.W. Guffey of Mechanicsville and Rouhi Hammond Guffey of Baltimore and by two brothers,Charles Wayne Guffey living in the western U.S., James Allen Guffey of Bell Buckle, TN, a sister-in-law, Cindy Parker Guffey of Bell Buckle, Tn. and six nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by four brothers, Earl Wayne Guffey; infant twins - Edwin Thomas and Edward Eugene Guffey; and William Guffey.
Mr. Guffey considered Tennessee his home state. Most of his formal education was taken in Tennessee where he graduated from Shelbyville Central High School in 1959, Middle Tennessee State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree and Bowie State University from which he earned his M. Ed. in 1974 in secondary school administration followed by more than 36 credits of post graduate education in psychology and counseling.
Mr. Guffey was initially employed in the fall of 1963 by the St. Mary's County Public Schools as a business education teacher. Following his M.Ed. Degree, he became a counselor at Chopticon High School. He terminated his 37-year career in 2000 following his diagnosis of colon cancer.
Mr. Guffey had a wide variety of interests and activities that made his life interesting. He was widely respected by those who knew him, and he took pride in speaking his mind whether his thoughts were endorsed by all those listening or not. During the 1960s he was active in the Civil Rights struggle. He had served on the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of St. Mary's County and several state-wide Baha'i committees. He enjoyed being a public speaker for the Baha'i Faith and did so by teaching in Baha'i summer schools and public forums in several states.
For nine years he was an active adult leader with the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Guffey enjoyed live theatre and learning about other cultures. He loved to travel having toured more than thirty foreign countries on five continents including a recent, month-long tour of India.While his children were growing up, he and his family enjoyed tent camping having done so in 49 states and all provinces of Canada. After retirement he and his wife continued their travels both on land and aboard cruise ships.
Mr. Guffey was an avid genealogist. Following more than thirty-five years of intensive genealogical research, he wrote and published his family history in a 539-page book, William Guffey 1786 - Ancestors & Descendants and Some Related Families. He was instrumental in having placed memorial markers on more than a dozen of his ancestors' graves and in organizing the Guffey Gatherings in Morgan County, TN, the first of which had as many as 150 descendants from 21 states in attendance. He traveled to Tennessee two to three times annually often visiting ancestral sites.
Additionally, he and his wife had jointly written and published a book on her paternal family from South Carolina. Mr.Guffey wanted to be remember as a Baha'i, husband, father, educator and Guffey family historian.
The funeral will be held at Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Holly wood Road, Leonardtown, MD on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in accordance to Baha'i law. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 9th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Larry Hill of Mechanicsville, Patrick Kholi of Lexington Park, Omeed Alaverdi of California, Van Gilmer of Ft. Washington, Bob Faus of Leonardtown, and Interment will follow at the Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made by the public to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1032, Lexington Park, MD 20653; U.S. National Baha'i Fund.
