After her mother died and her father remarried, Ann was raised by her aunt, 'Neuman', in Chesihurst, New Jersey. Anna was christened Anna Maria Augusta Gast, but when she went to live with her aunt and did not hear from her father she deeply resented it and decided to use her aunt's married name of Neuman, with her aunts approval. When she married Justus at the age of sixteen she used the name of Neuman.
She married Justus Adolph Reh Helfer (1863-1943) in 1889 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
