Justus Adolph Reh was the son of Amelia Helfer (1825-1897) and Adolph Herman Reh (1826-1864).

At the age of 1½, Justus was living with his grandparents and they were in charge of his christening. At that time, German law required that they have marriage papers, but his mother, Amelia, who was traveling, had her papers with her and could not be contacted. So they decided to go ahead with the christening at the Lutheran Church in Hueblingen, Germany, under his maternal grandparents name of Helfer. In later years, Justus Adolph resented the fact that he bore his maternal grandparents name rather than his parents name, but never took legal steps to change it.

He married Anna Maria Augusta Gast (1873-1931) in 1889 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
Children:
• Frederick (1890-1890)
Edna Emily Reh (1892-1989)
• Bernardine Philipine Lerminiaux (1894-1984)
• Adolph Henry Reh (1900-1984)
• Herman Richard (1903-1989)
Gertrude Bertha (1906-1985)
• Theodore Justice (1908-2005)
• Arnold Reh (1910-1974)
• Robert Reh (1913-2002)

When Justus was married, he worked for Gilbert Gabriel Studio (photographers) in Philadelphia. He also acted in plays using the stage name of Adolph Kossak. Later in his life he owned Helfer Photographic Studio in Philadelphia.

After Anna died, he married Laura Kutchbach / Kutzschbach / Kutzschback (1864-1933).
