From Holland St. John - "Robert Duckworth Jones was born near Mount Vernon, Indiana, the son of David and Margaret (Duckworth) Jones on the family farm. He married (1) Lydia A. Hall on December 13, 1855 who died a few years after they were married; (2) Sarah Ann Givens on June 19, 1869. Robert served in Company F, 25th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers for three years during the Civil War. Discharge papers list him as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, light complexion with blue eyes and light hair. He and Sarah took the second transcontinental train to California as their honeymoon trip. They settled at Roseville near where Sarah's father had located in 1853. While in California Robert served as constable and tax collector and several years as sheriff of Placer County. He also drove a butcher wagon and held a number of jobs. Six of his children were born in Placer County: Henry Thomas, Margaret Ella, Elva Estella, Frank Elsworth, Mary Lenore and Robert Duckworth. Robert and Sarah resided in Roseville for nearly twenty years; however, his health, never good since his Civil War days, was deteriorating and the family felt it necessary to move to drier climate. In 1888 they traveled north by covered wagon to Washington Territory and established a homestead on Salmon Creek near the town of Ruby in Okanogan County. Two more children were added to the family: William Forrest and Edna Grace (my mother). Continued ill health deprived Robert of the ability to earn a living after he moved to the Okanogan valley and the older children were forced to be the bread winners. He died from tuberculosis, pneumonia and liver trouble on October 23, 1891. He had also been, for the last three years, almost completely blind. He is buried in the Spring Coulee Family Cemetery (Clover) near the town of Okanogan, Okanogan County, Washinton."
