From Holland St. John "Freeman was born at Arlington, Iowa, the son of Winfield Scott and Marion Minerva Phillips St John. In the winter of 1901 he joined his father on a trip to Washington state. He graduated from Snohomish High School and shortly later worked in Alaska and Montana. On January 2, 1918 he married Fern Barnhart and during his lifetime he farmed, raised cattle, and did orchard work. For many years Freeman and Fern lived on a ranch in the Lime Belt near Riverside. This farm was near the area where his parents had established a homestead. After nine years his mother and father decided to return to Richmond Beach near Seattle and Freeman took over their farm. Leaving the operation of the farm after a number of years, Freeman was involved in orchard work until retiring at Pateros where he passed away in 1968."
