NELS J. MYHRE JR.

Nels was the only son to survive infancy in the Nels Myhre family. He was small like his mother but very bright and strong.

He married the young and prety Luciell Keller from Fingal, ND, and together with $25. and a cow they faced the harsh years of the 1930s. Education was not a great requirement for a young farm boy.

Nels attended Sanborn Public School for approximately eight years but farming was becoming more competitive and it was becoming obvious that he needed more skills in math and reading. Luciell was a smart teacher and he became a bright student.

They were an ambitious couple. He usually worked seven days a week during the summer and often late into the night by tractor light. After a bit of supper he often worked to repair farm equipment by lantern light. Luciell worked the fields beside him. During the slower months of the farm calendar, they took vacations by traveling to California or Illinois to work in Defense Plants.

A man of selected extremes, Nels loved to play cards, party, sing and participate in a good brawl.

Telling about it was even more fun. Halloween ranks were a joy to remember. One of his favorites related to how one farmer moved his outhouse and fired buck shot at the pranksters creeping around in the midnight hours of Halloween. A hasty retreat ended in a surprise to tell about for years. Another story to cherish was how to get a cow up the stairs and on the roof.

Nels succeeded as a farmer but the opportunity to enjoy his retirement was sadly stolen from him. He suffed from digestive problems most of his life and became alcolhol dependent.
