Washington Wheeler and Lula Amanda White were married 11 November 1894 in Paris, Lamar Co., Texas by the Rev. L. L. Price. They moved to Muskogee Oklahoma (Indian Territory) some time after their marriage. In the fall of 1896 they returned to Texas by covered wagon and settled at Maxey. He was a merchant for 45 years. His early store consisted of a barber shop, sundry shop and blacksmith shop. They lived in a two-room house behind the store. They moved to a larger house later and made a casket company out of the first house. Washington served on the school board, election board and was a member of the board of directors of the funeral home. Washington and Lula belonged to the Prairie Ridge Missionary Baptist Church were he was received by letter into the church in 1890.
