Martha Ann Shedd was born in 1875 to Thompson Shedd, a storekeeper in Big Fork, Arkansas, and Nancy Elizabeth Vandervier Shedd. She married Phillip William Lewis at the age of 16 and together they moved into Choctaw Indian Territory and lived about three years. Their three oldest children were born near what is now Howe, Oklahoma. Moving back into Polk County, they had 7 additional children. Children are listed on the memorial for Phillip William Lewis. She was a homemaker her entire life working to keep her 10 children fed and clothed on meager income.
