Death claimed one of Toulon's oldest citizens Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock when Mrs. Mary Addis passed away at her home on East Greenwood street following a long illness extending over a period of several months. Mrs. Addis, although failing in health for a long time, was not taken critically ill until about a month ago when her condition became much worse which necessitated her confinement to her bed. Her strength gradually ebbed until Monday afternoon when she peacefully fell asleep.
Funeral rites were held at the late home this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Oliver, pastor of the Christian church, of Kewanee, officiated.
The service of song was given by Mrs. S. D. Fell and Mrs. Thomas Fell, the selections being "Vale of Beulah," "It Is Well With My Soul," and "Home of the Soul." The singers were accompanied at the piano by Miss Gertrude Cooley.
The body-bearers were the four grandsons of the deceased: Orville Addis, Francis Blust, Hayden Heaton, Rollin Heaton.
Interment was in Toulon cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth Goodhart Addis was born in Poland, Ohio, September 12, 1849, and departed this life at her home in Toulon, Monday, July 6, 1926, being at the time of her death 76 years, 9 months and 23 days of age.
At the age of 15 years, she came with her parents to Toulon, Illinois. She received a good common school education and later attended school at the Toulon Seminary. At the age of 16 years, she united with the Christian church and adhered to that faith to the end.
April 20, 1871, she united in marriage to James P. Addis, of near West Jersey, where they made their home until the death of Mr. Addis, whose demise took place August 27, 1909. To Mr. and Mrs. Addis were born seven children, one dying in infancy. Those surviving are D. E. Addis, of Altona; Arthur C. Addis, E. Russell Addis, Edith F. Heaton, Theressa A. Swank, all of Toulon, and Eva P. Blust, of Victoria. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Alice Rice, living in the state of Washington. She also leaves other relatives and a host of friends.
Following the death of Mr. Addis, Mrs. Addis with her son Russell moved to Toulon, where she resided at the time of her death.
