Harriott was the daughter of Michael W. Whitmore Jr. She married John C. Smale on 3 October 1865 in Leesburg, Loudoun, Virginia. They had two children.

LEESBURG, July 17 - Mrs. Hattie Whitmore Smale, 89, and one of Loudoun County's oldest citizens, died last night at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Smale in Purcellville. She was the widow of John Smale and had spent most of her life in Leesburg. She is survived by one son, F.W. Smale, Washington. Funeral services will be held from the Leesburg Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member, on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, with burial in the Leesburg Cemetery.
