Theodore (Toby) Campbell, 88, husband of the late Annie Willman Campbell, died at his residence in Meadowbrook Place, Phoenixville RD, early last night after a shor serious illness. Born at Safe Harbor, Lancaster Co, He was a son of the late Jackson and Catherine Hanley Campbell and came to Phoenixville in 1882 at the age of 17, He found employment first with the Phoenix Iron Co, working in the Puddle Mills. He then operated a cigar and pool room in the building now occupied by Benjamin Gross on East Bridge St. He later moved next door to the Wall Block. Mr Campbell was a partner in the livery and horse-dealing business with his brother, George B Campbell, and later operated the Washington Hotel on Bridge St for seven years.
BECAME PARTNER Following this, he became a partner with his son, Leon in the men's clothing business at 228 Bridge St later selling the business to Martin and Martin. In 1928, they bought the Hallowell farm and developed Meadowbrook place and the adjoining golf course. In 1933 the partners acquired the Ullman and Deger recreation building on Morgan St which they operated until 1946. From that time to present their entire operations were at the Meadowbrook Golf Club. Mr Campbell was the oldest living member of the Phoenix Hook and Ladder Co holding membership for 53 years. Surviving in addition to his son Leon, are tow grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also two sisters Mrs Margaret Webb, Conshohocken and Mrs Minnie Guard, 331 1/2 Washington Ave.
