My first cousin (once removed,) who died at age 18.

He suffocated in a grain bin at Pike Seed Company in McDowell, IL. He was working for the company when the accident happened. He and another boy were unloading grain when they were sucked underneath the corn after Burton lost his footing at the top of the corn bin.

Burton fell in first and the other boy went in after him. The young man had Burton's coat sleeve in his grasp, but he passed out before he was able to help Burton. That boy was found unconscious, clutching Burton's sleeve. He was freed when the employer came out to call them in for lunch. He was taken to the hospital where he spent one night. Later it was discovered he had inhaled corn and part of a cob. He was taken to Chicago to have it suctioned out of his lung. Burton was not pulled out soon enough because he was further down in the bin, and had been under the grain longer. They found that Burton had inhaled a lot of corn. The other boy told authorities that as Burton was sucked down, he said "goodbye" to him. How sad.

He had graduated a few months earlier with the class of 1941 at Saunemin Township High School. He was in football and track, and was a basketball player, and class officer in high school. His father was President of the School Board at Saunemin Township High School.

He was my Mom's first cousin. They were a month apart in age, and went to school together since they were in first grade. They were very close. Their 2 families lived nearby to each other. He was the family's only son. This was a family tragedy that was talked about for many years. My aunt kept his picture displayed in her home until she passed away in her 80's. I always felt like I knew him, even though he died many years before I was born.

Rest well, Burton, your family remembers......
