Mrs. Austin Stamps Dies Unexpectedly

Neighbors and friends of Mrs. Austin Stamps and her family were deeply shocked and grieved when the announcement of her unexpected death at her home in Prentiss Thursday morning was made. She had been in declining health for a long period of time, and just before Christmas suffered a broken knee which caused much discomfort and aggravation, which brought on other complications. She had not been as well as usual for a few days, and on Thursday morning stayed in bed. When Mr. Stamps came back later in the morning to check on her, he found she had died in sleep.

Mrs. Stamps was a good neighbor and a devout Christian who lived her religion every day of her life. She was never heard to say anything unkind about any person, and always she visited and ministered to those who needed her as long as her health permitted. Until ill health forced her retirement, she was active in Church work. One of her sons said as he viewed her at the funeral home, "She was a good woman", and indeed that was the consensus of every one who knew her. She was devoted to family and loved her home and was content to stay there except for her church attendance and visiting sick folk at the hospital. She was a native of Bassfield, the daughter of the late Webb and Anna King Thompson.

Funeral services were held from the Prentiss Baptist Church, of which she was a member, at 3:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, with her pastor, Dr. L. E. Green officiating, assisted by Rev. James I. Harrell. Interment followed in the Prentiss Cemetery with Saulters Funeral Home in charge.

Pall bearers were Sam Bass, Terrell Shivers, Shorty Mikell, Dr. W. J. Byrne, Jimmy Davis and Billy R. Dewitt.

Survivors include her husband, four sons, Earl Stamps, John Eddie Stamps, Harold Stamps, Prentiss; Bobby Stamps, Monticello; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Thomas Miller, Prentiss; one brother, James Webb Thompson, New Orleans, La.; four sisters, Mrs. Noel Dewitt, Mrs. Johnny Dewitt, Prentiss; Mrs. Hazel Pontzius, Mrs. George Calhoun, Bassfield; and 13 grand children.
