Came from Holland and settled in Chicago in 1869. He and oldest son worked at the Mason trade. Right after the Chicago fire son Gerardus came to Jewell County and took a homestead next to the Dispatch store. In the fall of 1871 the rest of the family moved to Dispatch, Ks. They did farming and he also applied for a timber filing. He planted 10 acres of timber. He injured his leg in an accident while harvesting with a reaper. He lived three weeks after the accident, passing away August 7, 1877.
