Right after the Chicago fire son Gerardus came to Jewell County and took a homestead next to the Dispatch store. In the fall of 1871 the rest of the family moved to Dispatch, Ks. They did farming and he also applied for a timber filing. He planted 10 acres of timber. He injured his leg in an accident while harvesting with a reaper. He lived three weeks after the accident, passing away August 7, 1877.
