The Shippensburg Chronicle, Thursday, March 5, 1914.

Simon P. Shields, one of Franklin county's best known and most revered citizens, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Treher, near Orrstown, Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, of the infirmities of age, in his ninetieth year.
Mr. Shields was born in Letterkenny township near Pleasant Hall, May 20th, 1824, but early in his life he moved to Lurgan township, near Orrstown, where he spent the greater part of his long and useful life.
He was of Scotch-Irish parentage and carried with him through life those staunch and substantial qualities for which his ancestry are noted. He was a man of pleasing manner, kind, courteous and charitable to a large degree, a type of manhood much to be admired and revered. He was a member of the Pleasant Hall Lutheran church and took an active interest in the spiritual and financial support of his church and the general welfare of his community. He was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends who will learn of his death with much regret.
He is survived by these children: D. H. Shields, of Orrstown; Joseph Shields, of Lost Springs, Kansas; and Mrs. Harry Treher, near Orrstown, with whom he made his home.
The funeral will be held from his late home, Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with services in the Pleasant Hall Lutheran church conducted by Rev. S. F. Greenhoe, and internment will be made in the Pleasant Hall Cemetery.
