PVT Floyd Harold Shuman

Floyd was one of the four children of Ernest Wheeler Shuman and Cordelia A. Young "Cordie" Sale. His siblings were Delver Howard Shuman, Lillie Etta Shuman Saxon, and Armelda Jean Shuman. Floyd's maternal grandparents were Dr. Fleetwood H. Sale and Lillie Gibbins Sale; his paternal grandparents were Albert Shuman and Anna Wheeler Shuman.

"Pvt. Floyd Harold Shuman was killed in the crash of an army bomber at a Columbia, S.C. air base, a week after his graduation as a radio technician. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wheeler Shuman of Dillsboro."

"Obituary Floyd Harold Shuman, son of Ernest W. And Cordelia Sale Shuman was born near Dillsboro, Indiana, Aug. 5, 1915, and met his death Aug. 4th, 1942. He was sent from Indianapolis to Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas, and on March 3rd, was transferred to Scott Field, Illinois, where he studied to be a radio operator and mechanic, graduating with honors on July 16. He was sent to Columbia Air Base, Columbia, South Carolina, where he met death when a bomber he was on crashed in routine flight, Aug. 4th, 1942. I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead, he is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand He has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. We loved him, yes we loved him But angels loved him more And they have gently called him To yonder shining shore. The Golden gates were open A gentle voice said, come. With farewell left unspoken He calmly entered home."

"Military Funeral Held For Floyd H. Shuman Military funeral service, with the American Legion post in charge, was held at Dillsboro Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock for Floyd Harold Shuman, who met sudden death in an airplane accident at Columbia Air Base, Columbia, N. Carolina. Rev. F. A. Parker and Rev. Edward Dawson officiated. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery with full military honor. He leaves his mother and father, one brother, Dilver Schuman and a sister, Lily Etta Saxon, a grandmother, Mrs. Anna Wheeler Shuman and his fiancee, Miss Bessie Gerster to mourn their great loss beside a host of relatives and friends. One of his buddies from the Communication Dept. 378 Squad, Columbia Air Base, accompanied the body to Dillsboro and remained until after the funeral. He has been with young Shuman since both entered the service."
