Son of Archibald Duncan MacDougall who immigrated from Scotland in 1810 and married Louisa Ladner from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1815, Samuel was the 8th of 13 children. Samuel was a poet, in 1850 at the age of 18, he wrote the "Song of the Tenant Union League". It was about the unfair prices the "Landlords" were charging in this new promised land. Samuel met and married Margaret "Maggie" McDougall, daughter of John Coll McDougall and Ann Howard Chapman in 1859 in Shediac, New Brunswick. Samuel & Maggie raised their 11 children in Nine Mile Creek, Prince Edward Island, until moving to Shediac around 1881. He made Shediac his home for 34 years until his death. His wife Margaret resided in Shediac an additional 13 years until her death.
