John Robert Garner - age 91, passed away on September 9, 2009 at Elmcroft Assisted Living.

John was born on March 24, 1918 in Christiana, Tennessee where he graduated from Christiana High School in 1937.

He attended West Hills Baptist Church until his health prevented. He moved to Knoxville shortly after graduating and met Muriel Colvin in 1941. They married on September 1, 1942 in Washington, DC where John was stationed with the Army War College.

After spending 55 months in the Army, part of which was spent in Belgium and Germany, John returned to Knoxville at the end of World War II and went to work for Tri-State Roofing Company, heading up their Sales Department.

Shortly, he struck out on his own and opened Standard Roofing Company in 1958. Additionally, over the years, John bought land around Knoxville and built commercial offices and warehouses.

He closed his roofing company on 7/1/71 and retired. At this time, he and Muriel built their dream house on Fort Loudon Lake. After seven years of lake life and house-boating to UT football games, they sold that house and bought a condominium in Knoxville and also one in Pompano Beach, Florida, where they spent the next 20 winters.

Throughout his life, John was a member of numerous organizations. He was a life member of Master's Lodge 244, Scottish Rite, Kerbela Shrine Temple - Provost Guard (Captain in 1974) and Royal Order of Jesters (Director in 1977), Knoxville Billiken Club, the Elks Club, Lions Club, and Optimist Club. He and Muriel were also lifetime members of Deane Hill Country Club.

John is preceded in death by his son, John, Jr. and survived by his wife of 67 years, Muriel; his daughter, Jan, formerly of Atlanta, now residing in Knoxville; and three granddaughters, Stephanie and husband, Jason Rossiter of San Diego, Jennifer Garner of San Francisco, and Christy Agronow of Atlanta; two great granddaughters, Brea and Brooke Rossiter; and a brother, J.C. Garner, of Murfreesboro.

Many thanks to Elmcroft Assisted Living, NHC Fort Sanders, and Amedisys Hospice for their invaluable help and kindnesses.

Memorial service will be Saturday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Rev. John E. Pennington, Jr. officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite cause in honor of John. Condolence cards can be sent to Muriel at: 8024 Gleason Drive, Unit #138, Knoxville, TN 37919.
