Alexander Newton Stewart was the son of Daniel Stewart and Araminta Domer Coleman, brother to Anna J. Stewart, Mrs. M.C. Florence, and Mrs. E.M. Posey. Of the twelve children born to Daniel and Araminta, Great Uncle Alex was the next to the last to die. He was survived by his younger brother, Joseph Coleman Stewart who died the following year and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Ranger, Eastland County, TX.

After Alexander's mother, Araminta, died in 1878 the family moved to Dallas County, first settling in Mesquite, near Florence Ranch, and then moving to Grand Prairie. Alex became the head of the Stewart family, caring for his elderly father, Daniel, who died in 1909 at the age of 99. It's suspected that the elder Daniel is buried in Vernoy. Great Uncle Alex cared for his widowed sisters, Anna J. Stewart, Mrs. M.C. Florence, and Lucy Rabe. Lucy's daughter Doma had six children. These six lost both their parents within a year and the children were split up and sent to live with different relatives. Lucy came to live with Alex bringing Doma's two youngest children, Mack and Ira, with her. Great Uncle Alex raised Ira, and Ira signed his death certificate when he died.
