FORMER TROJAN SUFFOCATED IN PIQUA FIRE
DONALD W. COX HAD APPAENTLY BEEN SMOKING IN BED - RITES TUESDAY
Donald William Cox, 33, 719 Cherry street, Piqua, formerly of Troy, was suffocated to death in a fire in the bedroom of his home Sunday night.
His body was found by his brother, Marvin Cox of Pleasant Hill, when he returned home at 10:30 p.m. Apparently the dead man had been smoking in bed and the bed clothes caught afire.
Neighbors noticed smoke escaping from the back door. Two of them pushed their way through the dense smoke and found the fire was in the bedroom and saw Cox's body on the floor. They were unable to get to the bdoy due to the intense smoke.
Fireman were called and pulled Cox's body into an adjourning room where he was examnined by County Coroner Charles W. Kiefer and found to have died from suffocation. His body was badly burned from the waist up especially around the chest and face.
Cox arrived home at 6:45 p. m. after being downtown all day. He was last seen by his brother, Marvin, at 1:30 p. m. He was employed as a heat treater at Wood Shovel & Tool Co.
The fire victim was born June 15, 1916, in Champaign county, the son of Alva B. and Hazel Pine Cox, now Mrs. hazel Jones of Columbus.
Edith M. Cox, employed at Coble's dry cleaners, is his stepmother. His widow is Mrs. Ruth Siler Cox. They have one daughter, Sandra Joan. Besides the parents and widow and daughter, two brothers and a sister survive. They are Charles of Phoeniz, Arizona; Marvin and Mrs. Leo Swartz (Marguerite)both of Pleasant Hill.
Cox was educated at the Troy schools and moved to Piqua 11 years ago. The funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday at Cron funeral home, Piqua, with Rev. J. H. Edwards of Church of God, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery, Troy.
