Born Mary Elvira "Mollie" Crawford to George William Crawford and Sarah Vestal in Morganton, Fannin County, Georgia in February 1866. Mollie married Alfred Buchanan about 1882 at the age of 17, they had four children: Harley Buchanan who was born on March 20, 1883 (Note: In his late teens, Harley began using his mother’s maiden name of Crawford as his surname); Floyd Buchanan born on July 2, 1891 and died on September 12, 1897 at the age of six; Ivy Buchanan born in March of 1896 and died in October of 1900 at the age of four; and an unnamed baby girl who was born and died on November 28, 1898. She was born just two months after her father, Alfred Buchanan’s death in September of 1898.

The marriage record shows that “Mrs. Mollie Buchanan married John Carlile on December 26, 1898 in Fort Smith District of Sebastian County, Oklahoma which was referred to then as Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory on their on their certificate. John Carlile was born John Stephen Carlile on March 2, 1867 to Stephen & Lottie Carlile. Mollie and John had one child: Stephen Nila “Jack” Carlile who was born on March 28, 1900. The 1900 Indian Territory census record shows the family listed as: John Carlile, Mary E. Carlile, Nila Carlile, Ivy Buchanan, Harley Buchanan and Oscar Buchanan. Oscar Buchanan was Harley and Ivy’s older half-brother from their father, Alfred Buchanan’s previous marriage.

Mary Elvira "Mollie" Crawford Carlile passed away in 1904 in Gore, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma at the age of 39. She is buried on private land just west of the Gore Cemetery in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma.
