Alfred Buchanan was the youngest son of Samuel Buchanan and Martha Bines born in Muskingum County, Ohio. At the age of 21 he married Frances Martha White on December 22, 1852 in Perry, Muskingum County, Ohio. Frances Martha White was born on October 27, 1830 to Henry & Mary (Henderson) White. Just a year and a half later Frances passed away on March 28, 1854. Alfred and Frances had no children. The following year, on August 30, 1855, he married Caroline Webster. Caroline Webster was the daughter of Richard & Nancy (Corbus) Webster born in 1837 in Brush Creek, Ohio. Alfred & Caroline had two children: Richard F. Buchanan and Charlotte Buchanan. Sometime between 1865 and 1870 Alfred & Caroline divorced and she moved back with the children to live with her parents in Washington, Muskingum County, Ohio. Alfred left the State of Ohio and moved to Clarksville, Arkansas. The 1870 census record for Arkansas shows Alfred Buchanan as a boarder at the home of Melinda King, he is listed as single and working as a saloon keeper. Sometime after 1870 and before 1873, Alfred married for a third time. As of this writing, the name of Alfred's third wife is unknown. Alfred and his wife had three children: Oscar Buchanan, Frank Buchanan and Stella Buchanan. Sometime after the birth of their child Stella, Alfred's wife passed away between August of 1878 and 1880. The 1880 census record shows Alfred living in Spadra, Johnson County, Arkansas with his three young children, a widower and working as a "teamster". These were men that drove large wagons with teams of horses. On October 8, 1887 he married for a fourth and final time to Mary Elvira Crawford in Newton, Arkansas. Mary Elvira "Mollie" Crawford was born in February 1865 in Morganton, Georgia to George W. & Sarah (Vestal) Crawford. Mary had a son, Harley Crawford from a previous marriage. Harley was born on March 20, 1883. Alfred & Mary had two known children: Floyd Buchanan born in 1891 and who died at the age of 6 in 1897; Ivy Buchanan born in March of 1896 and who died at the age of 4 in 1900. In the spring of 1897 Alfred bought 40 acres in Dardenelle, Johnson County, Arkansas. That same year, on September 22, 1897, Alfred Buchanan passed away at the age of 66.
