Viticulterist. In his youth he took part in the liberal resistance in the Papal States, but later he devoted himself to viticulture, on his properties in Tuscany. He there developed an Italian type of champagne, which was quite successfull. After the revoution of 1848 he went to France, to support his cousin, President Louis-Napoleon, who later became the Emperor Napoleon III. In 1849 he was elected representative of the department of Yonne. However, he soon returned to Italy, as he was mainly interested in winegrowing.
He was married with Maria Anna Cardinali (1823-1879), daughter of a barrister in Lucca. They had no children.
