Frederick Billings was the son of George and Mary Billings
of Mecklenburg, Germany. Source information from 2nd marriage to Hattie Maxwell, Pension Application papers and 1880 Federal Census. Other source says born in Buffalo, New York. He came to United States 1842-1860 time frame into New York or Philadelphia. He was farmer in Buffalo, Erie Co., N.Y., on first enlistment paper says: "born Kingdom of Germany". Second enlistment says: "born in Buffalo, N.Y." Obituary says born in Cashton, Monroe Co., WI. I think he probably was a farmer in Cashton vicinity, Monroe Co., WI., before the Civil War and 2nd wife Hattie or daughter gave that information which is in error should be Mecklenburg, Germany.
Joined the Union Army during Civil War possibly to obtain automatic United States citizenship. The Union Army desperate for men to serve the Union made automatic citizenship for anyone serving that was foreign born and wanted United States Citizenship. They did this with many Irish men just getting off the boats from Ireland at the docks in New York and Philidelphia.
