Altoona Mirror, June 2, 1919: AGED COVE MAN DIES
Adam Acker died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Metzgar, of Roaring Spring, at 1.40 o'clock Friday morning, May 23, after an illness of five years and four months, during which he was confined to his bed a helpless paralytic. Despite his invalid condition, he was cheerful and content until a fortnight prior to his death, when his suffering became intense. He lingered near death for several days, and passed away Friday morning. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Acker, deceased, and was born near Beavertown, about eight miles from Williamsburg. He was over 72 years of age, having outlived all his brothers and sisters except for one, Mrs. John Durner of Martinsburg. He was married three times, his first wife, Sarah Jane Smith, preceding him to the grave fifty years ago. To his second wife, Agnes Hess[apparently, married name of Agnes], were born seven daughters and one son, John E. Acker of Johnstown. Five daughters survive: Mrs. Elizabeth Smart of Juniata; Mrs. Maggie Nail of East Freedom; Mrs. Harriet Prough and Mrs. Elise Brindle both of Altoona and Mrs. Catherine Metzgar of Roaring Spring.
The funeral took place at the home of Mrs. Charles Metzgar at 10 a.m. May 26, Rev. E. R. Detrick, pastor of the Salem Reformed church of Beavertown, of which deceased was a lifelong member officiating. Interment was made in Green Lawn cemetery at Roaring Spring.
