A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Lancaster August 19, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. A, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 9, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and re-mustered there February 12, then was left behind due to illness. Sometime around September 1864, he was detached to the inspector general's office as an orderly and remained in that duty until discharged from that organization July 13, 1865, a day later than the rest of the regiment.
He married Sarah C. Hallman, but they had no children. He died at his home from "chronic gastritis & exhaustion" with "old age" a contributing factor.
