He was born circa 1616-1620 possibly in Bradley Hall, Straffordshire, England, the son of Henry Dickinson and Sarah Cooper. He emigrated to America in 1630, coming from Yarmouth, England to Salem, Massachusetts. He may have returned to England to marry, as he married Janet/Jennet Brooks on April 15, 1640 in Farnley, Yorkshire, England. Thomas wrote a will on 8 March 1661.

Thomas and his wife had the following children:

James (married Rebecca Stevenson, as her first husband), Mary (married Abel Langley, as his second wife), Sarah (married Jeremiah Jewett), Mercy/Mary (married Nathaniel Adams), Martha (married William Quarles) and Thomas Jr.
