Ann was a 200 lb plus woman with a round face and strong Irish heritage. She was fun-loving and relished living in the grand 16 acre homeplace they acquired in Greenwich, Conn. The home was often filled with pets, children and plenty of guests for parties and such.

Yet Mrs. S. was serious about one thing - her faith. She was a Catholic. She held special prayer periods for her family in the Skakel homeplace, so all the children would grow up in a faith-based environment.

Her husband was the founder of the GREAT LAKES CARBON CORPORATION. It was a highly successful business. Her husband was considered one of the wealthiest in the nation.

Ann, along with her multi-millionaire husband - George - were killed when their refurbished WWII B-29 bomber airplane crashed near Union City, Oklahoma. Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low with both engines ablaze shortly before the crash.

The airplane's crew died in the accident as well.

She was a Christian.

(Presented at the British
Queen Mother's Funeral)

"You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray
that she'll come back
or you can open your eyes
and see all she's left.

Your heart can be empty
because you can't see her
or you can be full
of the love you shared.

You can turn your back
on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy
for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her
and only that she's gone
or you can cherish
her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and
close your mind,
be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on."
