Erasmus was the son of Erasmus Gaw and Maryann "Polly" Rutledge-Gaw. Erasmus descended from Revolutionary War soldier John Gaw (B: ~1752; D: 1788) and his wife Violet of Abbeville, South Carolina.

On 22 Sep 1861, Erasmus Gaw enlisted in the Illinois 9th Infantry Regiment. On 3 Dec 1862, he mustered out of service. Erasmus Jr. was the only Gaw male to serve on the Union Side during the Civil War. His cousins and uncles served with Gore's 13th Cavalry, Overton Company, Tennessee and another unit from the same county.

On 2 June 1859, Barry County, Missouri; Erasmus Gaw Jr. married Minerva Jane Brown.

In 1865, Clay County, Illinois; Erasmus Jr. married Martha Ann Brown. Identified children were: Malona E. Gaw (B: 1865, Clay County, Illinois); Priscilla "Prilla" A. Gaw (B: 1869, Clay County, Illinois); and Cyrus William Gaw (B: 4 Apr 1870, Clay County, Illinois; D: 1944, Los Angeles, California). Cyrus William Gaw and Mary Alice Farrar were the parents of Vercie Rae Gaw and twins Vernon Frank (D: 1961, San Francisco County, California) & Vivian "Bessie" Gaw (D: 1976, San Diego, California) , both born 23 August 1896, Steelville, Crawford County, Missouri.

Erasmus Jr. later married Martha Ann Davis in Lawrence or Barry County, Missouri. Other children were: Daisey E. Gaw (B: ~1875, Clay County, Illinois); Stephen Ralph Gaw (B: 1 Feb 1884, Clay County, Illinois); and Walter Monroe Gaw (B: 21 June 1889, Clay County, Illinois; D: California).

On 3 June 1891, Santa Cruz; Erasmus Gaw Junior married Anacleta Madrid.

On 15 Oct 1894, Santa Cruz; Erasmus married Refugio Valencia. They had a son, John Henry (Juan Enriques) Gaw.

Last wife was Maria Flavia Trujillo (B: 7 May 1873; D: 3 Apr 1948, Santa Fe). Known children were Ruperta and Isabel.
