Barney Field was born in Delaware county, Ohio, Aug. 5, 1849, being the third child of Minerva and Charles Field. When yet a young boy he with his parents and the other children of the family moved by wagon train to Stephenson, county, Ill., where he grew to manhood amid pioneer surrounding. In 1870 he and a friend made a trip west as far as Marysville, Kansas, and returned to Illinois. In 1873 he was united in marriage to Sarah Ilgen. They resided in Stephenson county, near the city of Freeport until 1877. While still in Illinois the two older sons John and Elmer were born. In 1877 the family joined a party of emigrants and moved to Seward county, Neb., where they resided one year and then moved to Jewell county Kansas, in 1879. They settled on a farm on east Limestone creek where the youngest son Cydney was born. In 1889 John and Elmer, the two oldest sons died, leaving the parents and youngest son. In 1907 the family moved to the present place of residence near Ionia. Barney Field fell from a stroke of appoplexy while at work on the farm Mar. 16, 1921, being 71 years, 7 months and 11 days old. He was able to be out and about until the last when he sank unconscious at his work. He leaves a wife, one son, a brother and two sisters, and many friends and acquaintances. One sister, one brother and two sons are dead. Funeral services were held at the home conducted by Rev. Adams, and the body was laid to rest in the Ionia cemetery.
