Polly Marie "Mary" PARTCH was born in Vergennes, Addison County, Vermont. She married Elijah Seth BARNUM (1806 - 1893) on October 25, 1827, in Sunderland, Bennington County, Vermont. She was his first wife, and to this union 13 children were eventually born: Susannah, Tamer, Elihu S., Warren Partch, Celinda, Sarah, Luthera, John M., Esther, Elvira, Lewis, Samuel Gibson Clark, and Francis J. "Frank".

The family moved from Vermont to Crawford County Pa. in 1850, where they lived until 1856. From here, the family moved to New Boston, Illinois, and stayed the winter there, but as soon as the spring weather permitted, the family pushed on to Kansas. They became the first residents of the new city of Hiawatha in 1857, and lived out the rest of their lives there.

Inscription

The sentiment across the bottom front of the stone says:

Tis hard to break the tender cord
When love has bound the heart,
Tis hard, so hard to speak the words
We must forever part.

Dearest loved one we must lay thee,
In the peaceful grave's embrace,
But thy memory will be cherished,
Till we see thy heavenly face.
