John Duncan was born in Abbottstown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, but in 1862, was a laborer living in York Borough, York County. He stood 5' 11" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

He enlisted in York September 23, 1861, and mustered in Harrisburg October 24 as a private with Co. I, 76th Pennsylvania Infantry, but spent more time on sick call or detached service than he did on active duty and was discharged on a surgeon's certificate June 2, 1862, by reason of an "anal fistula."

In September 1863, he headed for California and landed in Auburn, Placer County, where he worked as a saloon clerk and lived out his life. As far as I can tell, he never married.
