Hershel Belew, 86 year-old long time Woodward businessman, died November 22. 1999. Hershel was born September 21, 1913 in Woodward, OK, at the home of his parents, Leroy and Alta Belew; who was their only child. He attended school in Woodward and graduated from high school in 1933. He then went to work for the Railway Express Agency at the Woodward Depot. On June 6, 1935, he married Jo Blix Meek, and they moved to Pampa, TX, still working the Railway Express.
During World War II, Hershel served in the Texas Home Guard. After the war, he was transferred back to Woodward as the agent at that depot. In 1946, he started selling and cleaning typewriters, and had the Royal Typewriter dealer. Already calling on all the schools in Northwest Oklahoma, he started selling office and school supplies. In 1952, he sold his business to Southwestern Office and Bank Supply, and worked for them. He later went to work for H. Dorsey Douglas, and they put a branch store in Woodward. In 1959, he married Ann Porter, and she helped run the store, while he called on all the schools. H. Dorsey Douglas was known for their school forms, along with the teacher’s registers and grade books. After Mr. Douglas died, Hershel bought the Woodward branch and named it H. L. Belew, Inc.
In 1971, Hershel married Mary Segree, and they traveled to a lot of Arts and Crafts shows selling the crafts Mary made. Hershel sold his business in 1975, and retired. Now living south of Woodward, he built a large building and started selling new household furniture. He named this area as Belewville. He found an old outhouse and moved it in front of the building and painted Mayor Office, Belewville, OK. Mary died October 9, 1992, and he sold the furniture store. He moved back to Woodward and lived there until about two weeks before he died. He died in Lockney, TX, near his daughter’s home.
Hershel was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and received his 50-year membership pin in 1998. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners, and was president of the NW OK Shrine Parade Club. In 1956, he served as the Worthy Patron in Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Sharon Methodist Church.
Hershel is survived by one daughter, Lou Jean Burleson and husband Stan, of Floydada, TX. One son, Paul Belew and wife, Billie, of Woodland Park, CO, 6 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
