Lou Jean Burleson passed away on April 23, 2022, surrounded by her family. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at the Floyd County Memorial Park with Salt Jones officiating. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.
An Oklahoma girl transplanted in Texas, that truly thrived where she was planted. A City girl turned country girl where she worked alongside her farmer/rancher husband. Lou Jean loved her life and made the most of every day.
She was born Lou Jean Belew on February 10, 1937, to Herschel Lee and Jo Blix (Meek) Belew in Woodward, Oklahoma. She began school in Pampa, Texas and graduated from Woodward High School in 1955. Lou attended Panhandle A & M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where she met Stanley Carr Burleson. She worked for Braniff Airways for a year in Dallas before marrying her cowboy on November 28, 1958, in Central Christian Church in Dallas. They were married for 63 years. Together they farmed in the Cedar Hill community for close to 40 years and continue to ranch off the Caprock to this day.
Lots of good and not so good memories, but she would not have traded any of them. She was a wonderful Mother, always finding the silver lining in the job that laid before us. Making fun times out of the difficult ones. It was her desire to make memories with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that each would carry with them throughout their lives long after she was gone. "Wou" as she was called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all knew how to respond when she exclaimed "Who is happy", they would all respond joyfully with "Wou!" This made her heart and the hearts of her family happy. Another question she would pose to her grandchildren was, "When you see the sunrise who do you think of?" , and their reply was "Wou". Her children, great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren all experienced "Camp Wannacome". So many fun and wonderful memories.
Lou Jean returned to college to complete her degree and get her teaching certificate while her own children were still in school. She taught World History and Theater Arts in Floydada and Lockney, making many friends with students and teachers alike that she cherished.
After retiring, she pursued her next passion of storytelling. She shared her love of history by creating characters to tell the history of days gone by. She shared these stories with many far and wide.
Lou Jean was preceded in death by her Mother and Father; her brother, Paul Lee Belew; and her son, David Erin "Dusty" Burleson.
Lou Jean is survived by her husband, Stanley Carr Burleson; her daughters, Carrla Jones and husband Steve, and Beverly Brock and husband Kirk, all of Levelland. She asked that all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren be listed because without her, there would not have been any of them. Her grandchildren are Kolt Brock, Kwail Brock and Klay Brock, all of Lubbock; Ty Jones (Julie) of Lubbock; Caycee Jones Taylor (Matt) of Andrews; and Cyanne Jones of Lubbock. Her great- grandchildren are Brittan Brock; Sterling, Lyncoln and Brock Taylor; Elodie and Harrison Jones. She is also survived by her sister by marriage, Marisue Burleson Potts-Etheredge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Floydada.
