He was captured at Berryville, Virginia, June 13, 1863, and paroled the same day, then wounded at the battle of the Wilderness May 5, 1864. He returned to duty, detached as a sharpshooter in August 1864, and honorably discharged with his company June 20, 1865.

He married Mary Jane Heck in 1876 and fathered Anna Elizabeth (b. 1876 - married Samuel S. Aulthouse), Martha A. (b. 12/??/77), Sarah Jane "Sadie" (b. 03/??/80), William M. (b. 10/??/82), Harry E. (b. 05/??/85), and Luther A. (b. 03/??/89). His stated age at death is 77-11-5.
