He can be found in the census beside Mike Hayes also in this cemtery that I thought was his father. Unless the fellow was born John Michael Hayes, and at times used his middle name, or vice versa. I believe a family member to this group did so, a Walter Bernard McEvilly who was the child of Margaret [Hayes] McEvilly and Charles E McEvilly. So it is possible for reasons known only to some family that this could have been the case here.
From an e mail sent to me.
Hi Judy, FOUND him! He is the brother to Michael Hayes (1832-1903) and a policeman and former police chief there in Sprinfield. Found his obit which gave the info regarding his career. He had 2 daughters, one living in San Francisco and one living in Seattle Washington. Some is illegible, but enough information is given to know him to be the family. So excited to finally get the family from a location ---County Clare in Ireland! More work to do. Thanks again. Mary
