Mr. Jesse Melvin Thatcher, 83, of Lebanon, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis.

Mr. Thatcher was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Clinton County. He was a son of Nolan Francis and Jessie Gladys (Jones) Thatcher.

He married Elizabeth May "Betty" Scott on May 11, 1946, in Lebanon. Mrs. Thatcher died on Jan. 6, 1994.

Mr. Thatcher was reared and educated in Boone County. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He began his working career as a farmer. He then worked for Pittman Moore/Dow Chemical in Indianapolis as an Animal Technician for thirty years. After his retirement, he worked for the Lebanon Police Department doing maintenance.

Mr. Thatcher was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and he enjoyed his family. His interests and hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking and bowling.

He was a member of Lebanon Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include sons, Larry Thatcher and wife, Donna, of Douglasville, Ga., Dr. Russell M. Thatcher and wife, Carolyn, of Texhoma, Okla., Michael R. Thatcher and wife, Connie, of Lebanon and John D. Thatcher and wife, Nora, of Frankfort; daughter, Barbara A. Penrose and husband, Wayne, of Lebanon; eight grandchildren, Ritchie Thatcher, Gregory Thatcher, Janelle Thatcher, Jeffrey Penrose, Brenda Teegarden, Wade Thatcher, Angie Luper and Nikki Thatcher; ten great-grandchildren, Deanna Teegarden, Maryssa Thatcher, Austin Teegarden, Elizabeth Thatcher, Alex Luper, Tiffany Thatcher, Garrett Luper, Aaliyah Thatcher, Jennifer Robbins and Justin Faucett; sisters, Mildred Brock and Marjorie Hickman; and brother Noland Keith Thatcher.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael R. Thatcher II, and a sister, Joyce Fogle.
